What is the purpose of Mahjong?

Mahjong is a traditional tile-based game with roots in Chinese culture, played and loved across the world. It combines strategy, memory, and social interaction. At The Mahjong Boutique, we celebrate Mahjong as a way to connect with friends, family, and community.

Is Mahjong difficult to learn?

Not at all. Mahjong is easy to pick up and deeply rewarding as you build skill. Our lessons are designed for complete beginners as well as seasoned players looking to refine their strategy.

Why should I learn Mahjong?

Mahjong is more than a pastime. It sharpens memory and concentration, offers a mindful break from screens, and creates lasting connections with others.

About Lessons

Do I need any prior experience to join a lesson?

Not at all. Mahjong is easy to pick up and deeply rewarding as you build skill. Our lessons are designed for complete beginners as well as seasoned players looking to refine their strategy.

What will I learn in a lesson?

We cover the basics of Mahjong tiles, rules, and gameplay. You’ll learn how to recognise tile patterns, understand scoring, and practice hands-on play. As you progress, we also introduce strategy and etiquette, so you feel confident at any Mahjong table.

How long is each lesson?

Each lesson lasts two hours, giving plenty of time to learn, practice, and enjoy playing.

Do I need to find my own group of four?

Yes. All lessons are group-based and played in tables of four, as Mahjong is best learned and enjoyed in its authentic form. We ask that you try to gather your own group, as we do not offer one-to-one coaching.

What if I cannot find a group of four?

Please contact us! We will do our best to pair you up with other learners from our community.

Can children learn Mahjong?

Yes - Mahjong can be enjoyed at any age. For children, we recommend beginner-friendly sessions that focus on simple rules, pattern recognition, and fun. Please contact us in advance if you’d like to arrange a family-friendly lesson.

Do you offer corporate or private group lessons?

Yes. We can create tailored Mahjong experiences for private events, corporate team-building, or cultural gatherings. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

About Socials

How often do you have Mahjong socials?

We aim to organise at least one large private meet-up every two months.

What happens at a Mahjong social?

Our socials are designed to be more than just games. Expect a welcoming atmosphere where you can enjoy Mahjong, delicious food, and the company of fellow enthusiasts. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, you’ll find a table that suits your pace.

How long is each social?

Each social is usually 4-5 hours, giving plenty of time to mingle, eat, learn, practice, and enjoy playing!

Do I need to know how to play Mahjong to attend?

Yes, some background knowledge is required but we welcome beginners.

Do I need to bring my own set?

No - all Mahjong sets and accessories are provided. Just bring yourself (and your appetite if we're dining!).

How do I reserve my spot?

Get in touch with us about any upcoming socials and we will coordinate with you. Places are limited, so the sooner, the better!

Can I bring friends or family?

Yes, absolutely. Mahjong is about connection, and we love when people bring friends or family to experience it together. Just let us know beforehand and reserve your spot for your entire group.

About Your Tiles and Mats

How can I tell what the size the tiles are?

Our product descriptions clearly state the tile size (e.g. 31mm, 32mm, 37mm). Please refer to this size guide for your reference.

How can I care for my tiles?

To keep your Mahjong tiles looking beautiful for years to come, we recommend the following:

  • Storage: Keep your tiles in their case or bag when not in use to protect them from dust and accidental knocks.
  • Cleaning: Gently wipe with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. If necessary, use a lightly dampened cloth - but avoid soaps, chemicals, or abrasives, as these may damage the surface or engravings.
  • Environment: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity.
  • Handling: Handle with clean, dry hands to prevent oils or residues from dulling the finish.

With a little care, your tiles will remain in excellent condition and continue to bring joy to your games.

What is the difference between your neoprene and carpet ranges?

Both mats offer noise reduction, grip, and protection. Neoprene is priced higher because of its premium material and versatility — it’s smooth, durable, and portable. Carpet mats are thicker and heavier, giving a classic, stable feel for longer sessions at home.

What size are your mats?

All our mats are 80 x 80 cm.

How can I care for my mats?

Our neoprene and carpet mats are designed for easy use. Simply roll them up when not in use, and if needed, wipe lightly with a damp cloth. Avoid machine washing or heavy soaking.

Can I get involved or help out?

We’re always looking for enthusiastic people to support our socials or join as Mahjong teachers. It’s a great way to be part of the community, meet others, and network. Compensation can be discussed based on the role.

About Payment Options

What are the payment options available?

We accept all major credit and debit cards through Stripe. We also accept PayPal payments as well. If your card was declined then please do not worry, simply contact us and we will advise you.

About Delivery Options

Do you deliver across Dubai?

Yes. We offer delivery across Dubai for a flat fee of 30 AED.

Is delivery free?

Orders of 1000 AED or more qualify for free delivery.

Can I pick up my order for free instead?

Yes. We can arrange self-pickup from our premises at no cost - simply select that option during check out and contact us to schedule your pick up.

Do you ship internationally?

Do you ship to other Emirates?

About The Boring Stuff...

Has my order been dispatched yet?

Orders are generally dispatched within 1-3 working days, sometimes sooner. You will receive a dispatch email when your order has been dispatched, please check your SPAM/Junk box just in case it slips in there. If you cannot find your dispatch email or think you may have deleted it, contact us and we can give you real time information on whether your order has been dispatched or not.

I put the wrong address for my order, can I change it?

If you have put in the incorrect delivery address on your order then please contact us within 24 hours. If your order hasn't been shipped then we can update your delivery address but if the order has been shipped then unfortunately there is nothing we can do.

I need to cancel or change my order, how do I do this?

We always try our best to facilitate you, however if your order has already been shipped then we cannot cancel your order.

If you would like to change your order then please contact us ASAP. We will try our best to accommodate any changes providing your order hasn't already been shipped. If your order has been shipped then we will not be able to change the order.

My order is still not here please help?

If you order has taken longer than 15 working days from dispatch then please contact us and we will look into it for you. We offer a Money Back Guarantee or will have your order resent.

Why did I not receive a confirmation email after placing the order?

There's a good chance that our email has ended up in your SPAM/JUNK folder so please do check there. If you still cannot find it and would like it resent then please do let us know.

I don't have a tracking number, when will I get it?

When you receive your dispatched email you can contact us for an update on your tracking.

At our store, all sales are final and we do not offer refunds. Please read carefully before making a purchase.
